Do you have a child who has some difficulty with Math or English? If the answer is “yes,” know that you’re not alone. Many parents around the world deal with the same problem. Skills that we receive from our Mathematics and English classes can help us work our way around numbers and words in our everyday lives. It is important that, as early as childhood, a foundation for these skills has been well-established.
Unfortunately, many children don’t have that stable foundation. In fact, some kids grow up hating Math or thinking that they could never master English. There are many factors as to why this happens, such as poor teaching methods or high expectations. However, each child is unique and a “one-size-fits-all” technique of teaching may not always work on them. The question now is: how can parents help their kids develop these skills effectively in a positive way without asserting too much pressure?
The answer is to let students develop their Math and English abilities at their own pace – and this is exactly the teaching philosophy that Eye Level Learning Center employs. Formerly known as E.nopi, the center originated from South Korea over 40 years ago.
The “Eye Level” Philosophy
To understand their concept of “Eye Level” learning better, the center shares a story of a man appreciating art at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. There, the teacher knelt down as he observed each painting in the museum. When asked about it, he explained that he was an elementary school teacher and will be bringing his students to the museum the following day. He wanted to know how his students would appreciate the paintings from a student’s eye level.
From this story comes Eye Level Learning Center’s philosophy in educating children. Understanding a child’s needs and perspective is key to his or her success and growth. That is why Eye Level study materials are uniquely designed to promote “self-directed” learning.
Today, Eye Level Centers and other Daekyo services operate globally and cater to children aged 3 to 16, of all nationalities throughout the world. The learning center has helped over 2.5 million children. In the United States, Eye Level Centers focus primarily on Mathematics and English but some branches provide Korean language lessons, as well.
Mathematics and English, Eye Level Style
To jumpstart a kid’s journey in Math, some Eye Level Centers offer an additional program named Play Math. Here, fundamental learning concepts are introduced to preschoolers. For example, recognizing simple shapes and sizes, basic counting, simple addition and subtraction, and sorting of objects. These exercises are critical in developing basic motor skills in preschoolers.
Eye Level’s comprehensive math program offers development in both Basic and Critical Thinking. Basic Thinking Mathenables students to complete the foundation of mathematics and covers the following study areas: numbers, arithmetic, measurement, and equations. In Critical Thinking Math, students develop analytical skills in depth perception, problem solving, and reasoning. In addition, students are expected to master working with patterns and relationships, Geometry, and measurement. Ultimately, Eye Level students will master problem solving and reasoning skills.
Eye Level English program focuses assisting students to systematically master reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Developing reading comprehension is the main focus of the English curriculum. Through this well-rounded program, Eye Level English not only helps build and improve the above mentioned 4 main skills but also foster students’ interest in the English language.
Even as children are taught to work independently, they learn within an interactive process and are given feedback from the instructors. The center offers low student to instructor ratio, which allows instructors to address the needs of each and every individual student. Most importantly, Eye Level Learning Center shows children that learning can be fun by providing positive coaching and mentoring.
